I reread Hannibal last week (for the umpteenth time). In it, Thomas Harris clearly describes the “memory palace” that Lector built for himself over the years. I haven’t read The Memory Palace of Mateo Ricci because Harris describes the concept clearly.

This is news to me, but not good news. Apparently, not only are cell phone call records being sold but one can also buy the actual location of where the call was made from. Either these companies will have to be shut down, or there is going to a be whole new market for a cell phone maker who can encrypt or destory such information at the call center. A company that doesn’t keep (or sell) records will become very popular, I’d think.
Here’s the article. We don’t need terrorists to threaten our security. Legally-operating businesses seem to be doing a good job of that already.

If you use cell phone service from Cingular, Sprint or T-Mobile, you may be interested to know that anyone with Internet access and $80-$110 on a credit card can pull your phone records. All they need is your cell phone number.
the small publishing industry
Although I promised myself I’d stop blogging about obstacles in getting my books out, I really can’t believe the reactions I’m getting.
I collected a very thick file of stupid/crazy/nasty e-mails from my escort work. Sometimes amusing but completely predictable. Now I’ve started collecting the e-mails I’m getting from people in the publishing industry. The response has caught me completely off guard. I never guessed that freedom of the press is not a literal concept.

Geeky
I've discovered the pleasure of working with Brian Gardner's WP themes. His free stuff is nearly flawless and his more expensive stuff is mind-blowing. Although his work is easy to use right out of the box, there's infinite fun to be had by customizing (i.e., destroying) it. As you can see here.
