I know I’ve been MIA for the past couple weeks. Got serious about traveling and so had to make some changes in order to be on the road for the next several months. All my stuff is stored in Texas (including my car) and mail and bills are as taken care of as possible. My system isn’t perfect, but it’s better than it was a few months ago. I’m in Dallas taking care of a few more things, like replacing my luggage that the USPS lost when I mailed it in for repairs (next time: FedEx).

There’s a conference in Toledo where I’m co-presenting a paper about labor violations in the Nevada brothel system (yes, it’s focusing on one particular brothel but it’s not named in the paper and won’t be named here รขโ‚ฌโ€œ ahem). That’s the week of my 34th birthday! That takes care of the first week of October. After that…probably wandering around the US for a bit. There are people I would like to see in Chicago and DC, if nothing else. Then out again. I’m looking hard at Asia right now. There are a lot of things attracting me and there are a lot of places to go and see on that side of the world. It should occupy my interest for a while.

No plans are set in stone and I don’t have dates until I have tickets in hand. I Twitter when I’m traveling and post stuff in my Personal Updates column to the right.

So there you go: The Plan — such as it is. For once, my silence has not meant anything negative, just busy and pre-occupied (and minimal Internet access).

  1. I was beginning to wonder if you’d fallen off the planet. Promise us you’ll blog about your travels, when you can. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  2. Alexa,

Still hanging on! ๐Ÿ™‚ I will blog and Tweet, of course! Hopefully more photos too.

Oh — I am behind on my emails but I’m sure this surprises no one.

  3. YAY! I hope you can get around to Chicago. I’d LOVE to see you again! I need to drop you an email line anyway, but I reckon you’ve been as busy as I have. Got some catching up to do!

I have to say though, fixin’ to get ready to? Wow, that’s a whole lotta pre-preparation! ๐Ÿ˜›

  4. Aspasia,

You’re one of those people I want to see. It’s been too long! And I want soul-food while I’m there. ๐Ÿ™‚

Good to hear you’re busy! I hope that means good things for you, at any rate.

My title is my East Texas dialect coming out. I say this a lot and more than once people have pointed out the phrasing is a little…funny.

  5. Your posts have been missed. I look forward to continuing to follow your travels. Your comments about the world around you create a very interesting and thought provoking read.

  6. Greg,

Thank you! I’ll post more often. A lot of things are getting settled, especially after the conference next week. I ALWAYS have a backlog of posts and emails. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Gypsy,

Thank you so much! LOVE hearing that!

    Casey,

No, we are not going to release the paper after the conference. My co-author is working toward academic publication. This is like a rough draft, believe it or not. We’ve discussed a book (groan!). So…no, paper out. I like the idea of academic publication!

  7. Amanda, Happy 34th birthday. You don’t look a day over 25. Enjoy your day. Check your emails for a birthday present. Delivery will take 24 – 48 hours from today.

  8. Happy belated birthday. I read from your posts that it was this week. I had today off so I finally got a chance to log in. Enjoy your time and I wish you well.

  9. Hi! First time viewer here and I’ve come across your site as I read your first book, freshly delivered by Amazon. I’m very interested in pursuing this career and learning all I can from one of the smartest professionals out there, so thank you!

I know this comment is random, but I thought I’d address something I read in your book. In your section on the history of internet use among escorts, you mentioned that there’s no documentation on the matter. I have something you may wish to read which actually does fully chart the major shift from majority “streetwalking” to the internet age of middle-class, internet using and educated escorts. “Temporarily Yours” by Elizabeth Bernstein gives the whole story with an exhaustively researched, scholarly approach!

Thanks again for everything that you do. Though I am a MtF transgendered individual looking to get into the business, I know I have much to learn from your experiences and look forward to being able to start on a firmer footing than most! <3 <3

  10. Cheyenne,

Thanks for the comments! GIves me a big smile.

I have yet to read her book but I do have it (in a box in storage). Amazon shows it being published after Book 1. I look forward to reading it now since it does include a history! Someone needed to do it.

Wishing you much success in your new journey! Keep yourself safe. Look forward to seeing you blossom!

  11. Labor violations in the brothel system? I’d always assumed that they set them up as independent contractors so they wouldn’t have to be covered by labor regulations. I forgot about the people who serve the drinks and vacuum the floors, though.

  12. Mitch,

You don’t understand. The BIG labor violation is that supposedly we’re independent contractors yet we’re treated like employees. So we either need to be employees or true independent contractors — being in this grey area is indeed illegal.

Plus a number of other things. Should’ve been there! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  13. All the best for 2010 and hope you travel and get chances for tours to more and more countries…..Buy me a beer if my prayers are answered, OK? ๐Ÿ˜€
